If you have a central heating system then you will know how great it can be. After all, it has the ability to heat your entire home and you can do all of this with the click of a button. If your energy bills are high or if you know that you need to start using your energy more efficiently then there are a couple of things that you can do to make all of this happen.

Turn Out the Pilot Light

If you have a pilot light flame on your boiler then turn this off. It is using gas 24/7 and it will seriously be rocketing your bill. When the warmer weather hits, simply shut down your boiler and only turn it on when you need to shower, etc. if you have a prepay meter then this could save you a ton of money and you can top it up at any local shop as well. You won’t have to worry about any catastrophic bills at the end of the month and you will be using much less CO2. It’s also worth looking into heating oil tanks as well.

Solid Fuel

Some people only use central heating as a backup. They have solid fuel to heat their home during the winter and this can be a good idea. If you are using solid fuel then you will find that this is free in most cases as you can use scrap wood from around your local area. If you have a fire in your living room then try and buy fuel or wood that is smokeless, and always try and keep a lot of supply on-hand at all times. When you do this, you will soon find that you don’t need to turn your central heating on at all and this is a fantastic way for you to save money.

Thermostat

Having a thermostat can work wonders for your energy bill. You can set it so that it comes on at a certain time or you can even set it so that it doesn’t turn on unless the house temperature drops to a certain amount. When setting your thermostat always set it lower than what you would normally like. This could really cut down on your energy bills and it will also be much better for the environment as well. Of course, it also helps to have the radiators in some rooms turned off. This can include the guest bedroom, the bathroom and more. When you do this, you can easily heat the rooms that you are going to be active in and this will really help you to make your home more efficient.

Of course, it has never been easier for you to make your home more energy efficient and by starting with your heating, you can be sure to really get a great result out of the work that you put in. Why don’t you try and utilise some of the top tips above, to find out how much money you could save?
