The Plastic Bag Charge

This week the plastic bag charge was introduced to England. As someone who advocates the use of reusable eco-friendly bags for shopping I feel very strongly on this issue. This is why I started designing and selling canvas tote bags several years ago. The number of plastic bags is reaching an all time high, single use plastic bags are unsustainable and have a huge cost to the environment.

While I welcome the charge I have seen a lot in the media about why we should pay. People say they do not mind paying for bags if it means they are helping the environment. However the charge is actually in place to discourage you from using any form of plastic bag for the purpose of carrying your shopping.

What is needed is a cultural shift in the way we shop. Our grandparents never had this issue, with paper and reusable bags being all they knew. Try to invest in a good quality multi-use bag that will last for years and will easily biodegrade when the time comes. I personally only use very sturdy heavy-duty canvas bags with sides and gussets. They are strong and large enough to carry a family shop. Once you make the shift to reusable tote bags it is hard not to get addicted, I take mine everywhere!

What are your thoughts on the charge?

  1. I really don't mind the charge because cloth bags are much prettier! Also, they're more durable than the thin plastic bags you get in supermarkets. I will miss the unique bags you get clothes in - some shops created fabulous bags, that you could reuse.
My parents live near Wales, so I've been used to the charge for a while. Also, it's good that any money from bags purchased will go to charity, not to mention the environmental benefits. I regret that now I have to buy special bags for my bin, as previously I used the supermarket carrier bags.
    Your totes are so cute!

  2. I've always carried spare bags in my handbag so don't mind the charge at all, I can't believe it didn't come sooner! I really really hope that it encourages people to be sensible with their carrier bags. I think I may notice the change at Christmas time, in the past when I've been out and done a huge present shop I've been given huge carrier bags which are so helpful to carry all the shopping in, my cloth bags are nowhere near big enough for that!

    1. I've notice a difference just walking done town the other day, everyone is caring the bag for life or canvas bags. I agree I can't believe it's taking them this long!
