The Late Shows 2015

On Saturday 16th May I attended the ever popular and truly inspiring The Late Shows in Newcastle/Gateshead. It has grown massively since it's launch back in 2007 doubling in size with venues across the city opening their doors to the public. Running over the Friday and Saturday night the line-up was jam packed full of culture related fabulousness! Its a chance for you to grab yourself a glimpse behind the scenes of a museum or gallery after hours. To visit the studio of an artist or designer that you would never usually get to see, to talk to them and see how they work. The event encourages people of all ages to visit venues and even take part in workshops that they wouldn't normally experience.
The glow stick has become an iconic symbol of The Late Shows.

I wasn't able to visit on the Friday night so I head over on the Saturday. I started my journey at The Toffee Factory with their Ouseburn Fiesta and Vamos Festival. These ladies were fantastic and there was also a selection of food and craft stalls celebrating Spanish and Portuguese speaking cultures.

I then made my way to The Mushroom Works where you can find studios filled with diverse work from artists and crafts people. Above left is Just Look Twice a mother and daughter collaboration producing bright and colourful quirky designs. Above right is Jane Frazer's beautiful hand-woven creations.
Bronwen Designs are beautiful image based jewellery made with traditional silver working techniques. I've had my eye on one of her pieces for a while so I used this opportunity to buy a stunning geometric brooch.
After the enjoyment of The Mushroom Works my next venue on the hit list was 36 Lime Street  it houses over 40 artists, makers and designers. The building itself is like a maze a warehouse full of studios and creative spaces. The above work is by local artist Jim Edwards his colourful depictions of Newcastle's cityscape are instantly recognisable with his distinctive style and colour palette.

Will you be attending The Late Shows 2016?

I would recommend that you do!

New Tote Bag Designs

I would like to introduce you to the new members of the Dizzy Miss James tote bag team Miss Flamingo, Mr Nuts and Mr Puffin. My squirrel and puffin designs have only been available as cushions until now, due to their popularity I have expanded the range. I have had this the flamingo design in my head since last year so its fantastic to finally see her in production!

We have been lucky enough to have some splendid sunshine up North which fitted in quite nicely for a mini photo shoot. With bags in hand and help from a few props, flowers, baguette and pink lemonade (which was delicious)  I snapped away in order to get my new additions on the website. Miss Flamingo is already proving to be popular with her fantastically flamboyant style!

Of course the old favourites are still available Mr Badger, Mr Panda and Mr Fox and they are all excited
to welcome the new designs to the DMJ family.

I hope you like them!

The Most Glorious Sunny Day

Last Thursday I woke up to the most glorious sunny day. Not wanting to miss the opportunity of catching some rays and boosting my vitamin D I rearranged my scheduled work to the evening and headed up the coast to Alnmouth. One of the upsides of self-employment the ability to manage my own hours and as the saying goes 'make hay when the sun shines'!
During my time in recovery from ill health (read more about that here) the beach became part of my therapy. I found the way the sand moved with me helped me to focus on my balance issues. I always felt more confident walking on sand,. After all the thought of losing my balance and falling on the soft sand was a lot more appealing than flat hard concrete!

I believe that there is something soothing about the sea, the calming sound of the waves lapping on the shore accompanied by the colours and textures of the beach and rock pools. Its good for the soul.  It's a place of reflection and although I don't live far from the coast you always feel like you've left everything behind allowing yourself to switch off and relax.

After enjoying a long leisurely stroll I worked up an appetite so headed to Alnmouth main street for a spot of lunch. The Sun Inn  make a mean Stilton and Mushroom Pie a really good healthy portion and it is truly delicious, I would highly recommend! Left extremely full I had a walk around the village to work off that pie then finished off the day with a visit to The Village Tea Room.

A lovely day was had indeed.

 Enjoy your Bank Holiday Weekend!
